Bob's trying to be funny, but the issues before us are so serious, that it's hard to have a laugh when so much is going wrong.
True, of course. But we have to consider the venue. "Grim" gets you nowhere on a show like "The Colbert Report". Part of political persuasion is to get the audience WITH you, and in that setting that takes at least a small sense of humor. The best way to avoid being taken down by mockery is to accept it, roll with it, and even do a little bit of it yourself. Sort of the verbal equivalent of a Judo move.
