It's National Something-or-other day again

In case you didn't know it, today, May 15th, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.  Well, actually it's Police Officer's Memorial Day, established by "An Act Of Congress".  Now, I don't want to minimize the importance of law enforcement - after all, I'm a Libertarian, not an anarchist.  But it struck me that we have so many national days of this-or-that that nothing really stands out - everything has its own "National Day," "National Week" or even "National Month".  Take a look here for some of the silliness... http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/may.htm

Heck, when they get around to proclaiming "National Velvet Day" I won't even know if I'm supposed to celebrate a horse or fluffy cloth!

Then, I stumbled across this little gem, and I froze in my tracks:  May 1st is now "National Loyalty Day" http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/04/20070430-3.html

The government is now telling me when and how I shall display my "loyalty" to this country.  My GAWD, what have we come to?  What's next, the Loyalty TEST?

Don't get me wrong.  I believe fervently in the founding principles of this nation.  But if the government has to TELL me to honor those principles, then they are already in deep trouble.
